INTERVIEW TECHNIQUES ~ HELPFUL HINTS
- Firstly find out as much as possible about the company / firm.
- Ensure that you know how to get there early.
- Try to find out the name of at least one interviewer to make it more personal. After all they look for someone who will fit in with them.
- Be polite to the secretary/administrator. Sometimes their opinion counts.
- SMILE as you go in - and make eye contact. Things will be much more relaxed.
- Ensure that you are able to say something interesting and clearly about the topics you list under INTERESTS in your CV. Very often interviews start here and provide the opportunity for you to show how well you're able to communicate. Keep your hands still.
- Try to help the interview develop into more of a conversation than a question and answer session.
Have two or three questions to ask yourself but at no time take over the proceedings.
- Difficult or below the belt questions can usually be turned around with a brief admission and the little word BUT. ("But I overcame this by ....") This gives you the opportunity to turn negatives into an impressive bunch of positives.
- A BRIEF PAUSE each time before you speak enables you to (re)consider what you might otherwise say if you dived straight into answers and comments.
- Think of some questions to be asked and work out effective replies. But don't try to remember too much information because it is important to be fairly relaxed (even if you don't feel it).
- Be enthusiastic. Employers place this above qualifications - an employee who wants to do the job is easily taught and more valuable than one who is not so fussed.
- Never drink or smoke at or awaiting interviews. These neither help you achieve your objective nor give the best impression.
- If the questioning becomes unpleasant you may simply say you are terminating the interview and politely leave. Such employers would hardly provide a happy workplace for you.
- After the interview write again. "Thank you for your interests in my application .... I was very impressed with our meeting .... feel particularly suited .... I look forward to meeting you again". Sometimes this initiative tips the balance.
